Motorcycle insurance coverage offered

Usually, 6 types of motorcycle insurance coverage are offered by the insurance companies that are discussed below.

1. Collision coverage: It covers damages caused to your motorcycle when it is involved in an accident regardless of who’s at fault. This coverage pays for damages minus the deductible amount you’ve chosen while purchasing the policy. If you have this coverage, then you’ll get paid for the book value or the actual cash value of the vehicle before its collision with an object or any other vehicle.

2. Comprehensive coverage: Comprehensive insurance covers for damages caused by theft, fire, vandalism, etc. It can be said that it covers for damages other than collision. Here also, the insurance company covers the book value of the vehicle and pays for damages minus the deductible amount.

3. Property damage and bodily injury liability: The insurer pays for the claim when you’re responsible for an accident wherein a third person gets injured or your vehicle damages another person’s property. While purchasing this coverage, check whether or not the coverage includes Guest Passenger Liability that provides protection when someone riding with you gets injured in an accident.

4. Medical coverage: This coverage pays for your medical treatment when you get injured in an accident regardless of whether or not you’re at fault. However, most of the insurance companies limit the payment of medical treatment within three years after the accident. The coverage is also usually limited to a certain dollar amount.

5. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: If you have this coverage, then you’ll get paid for the damages caused to you and your vehicle when someone else is responsible for the accident and he/she is either uninsured or doesn’t have adequate insurance to pay for it. It typically covers lost wages and medical treatment.

6. Roadside assistance coverage: This coverage pays for towing your motorcycle to the nearest qualified repair facility when it breaks down due to dead battery, lockout, flat tire, insufficient supply of oil, fuel, water, etc. or entrapment of mud, water, snow or sand within 100 feet of the roadway.

If you don’t ride your motorcycle round the year, then you may not insure your vehicle for the time it remains in the garage. There are some insurers that offer seasonal motorcycle insurance policies that cover your vehicle for 6-9 month periods – the time period when you ride your motorcycle.
