How To Dig Yourself Out Of Credit Card Debt
Many people find themselves in a situation that they fear they will be unable to get out of. This situation is credit card debt and it is something that can sneak up on you before you even realize that you are close to facing a problem. You might charge a little something here…a little something there and before you know it, you owe thousands of dollars for which you are unable to repay in a timely manner.
It is not usually so much the regular payment amount, but it is amount of interest that most people are charged that makes it so difficult. As if the credit cards didn’t already start with a high enough interest rate, should you become late on just one payment, your interest rate skyrockets and it stays that way for the life of the account. Some people find themselves paying up to 21% interest. This is an insane amount of money and it is usually the leading cause of why people are unable to get ahead with the amount they owe. Even if you make a payment, you are not going to be all that much better off than you were before. It is like treading water.
So what is a person to do? You want to get out from under all of the credit card debt but do you really know how? Some people might suggest bankruptcy but that is actually the last thing you ever want to consider doing. If you were to file bankruptcy, you might as well consider yourself out of commission for seven years. Forget about a new car or a new mortgage. You won’t even be able to get a low balance credit card for emergencies. Depending on the line of work you are in, you might not be able to find employment. Plus, the bankruptcy laws have changed so most likely, at the end of the bankruptcy, you will still have the same debt.
The first thing you need to do is to work on making your monthly payments. You can’t get ahead if you are skipping a month of payment. Now, go through all of your bills and expenses and find yourself fifty to a hundred dollars a month. Don’t think you can find it? You probably are not looking hard enough. Do your children really need those cell phones? Do you really need cable television right now? If you look hard enough, there are probably several ways you can cut back on expenses. This is just a temporary thing. Once you reach your credit card debt relief goal, you can go back to your normal way of life.
Start applying every extra penny you have to your credit card balance. If you have several cards, make sure that you start with the card with the highest balance. Are you able to qualify for a new credit card? If so, look for a card that will give you a few months of interest free payments on all balance transfers. This way, every single cent that you send the credit card company will be applied directly to your balance instead of the bank account of the credit card company.
If after looking through all of your expenses you find that there truly is nowhere that you can cut back, you might want to look into non-profit credit counseling or debt consolidation agencies. Make sure that you are using the best company though as there are some out there that claim to look out for consumers when all they really want is your money. Remember, if you have five hundred dollars to send some company for “help” then you have five hundred dollars that you could be sending your credit card company.
Depending on the amount of debt you have, this could be a long road. However, if you create a game plan and stick with it, you will find that you will be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Just make sure that after you dig yourself out of credit card debt that you are refraining from repeating the same mistakes.
